If you've never had a King Cake, ours is similar to a brioche cinnamon roll with a Mardi Gras twist. After the cake is baked to perfection, we top it off with our house-made Madagascar vanilla frosting and the traditional purple, green and gold sprinkles.
A little history about the King Cake tradition:
This festive cake is typically eaten starting on January 6 in honor of Epiphany, or Twelfth Night, which marks the arrival of the three wise men in Bethlehem who delivered gifts to the baby Jesus. The cake makes its appearance on tables throughout the Carnival season, which runs through Fat Tuesday, since itβs the last day to enjoy indulgences before Lent.
In the past, a bean or coin would be hidden inside the cake, but these days a tiny plastic baby is used. Whoever is served the slice of cake with the hidden baby is named βKing" for the day and gets to host the next year's King Cake party!
